Additional information:
Russian violinist Leonid Kogans career was overshadowed by that of his compatriot David Oistrakh. Kogan was and is a less well-known name in the West. This in spite of his superb technique, lean tone and winning the Queen Elizabeth Competition in 1951.
Kogan married Emil Gilels sister, Elizaveta, a violinist. They regularly appeared on stage together. Kogan also performed trios with Emil Gilels at the piano and Rostropovich playing the cello.
In his solo performances Kogan showed himself to be very versatile. Playing anything from the Bach solo suites to Paganini Concerti. This set includes seldomly heard concertos by people like Denisov and Khrennikov, some smaller works and arrangements for violin and orchestra and a large amount of varied chamber music. |
