Additional information:
Russian pianist Emil Gilels (who sadly died in 1985) was one of the giants of the 20-th century. His power and greatness of vision were legendary, but he also possessed the most breathtaking sensibility and tenderness. He was greatly appreciated in the West, and made many recordings for RCA and Deutsche Grammophon.
Beethoven was one of Gilels specialties, he understood like few others the language of this tortured genius (he even looked like him!). This set offers a rich repertoire of Beethoven: the complete 5 piano concertos, and a selection of piano sonatas: listen to the adagio from the Hammerklavier Sonata and you will know: these are profound performances by a truly great artist.
Live performances made between 1961 and 1984, from the Russian Radio Archives |
