Additional information:
Joseph Haydn is considered to be more or less the inventor of the genre string quartet. Although he also wrote quite a number of trios for various instruments, his quartets excel in equilibrium in every possible way. He wrote two violins, a viola and a cello into a perfect match. And he apparently loved it so much that he wrote no less than 83 of them.
We have started to record them all with the Buchberger Quartet. This ensemble is probably more associated with twentienth-century music, but they know their classics very well. We begin at the beginning: Opus 9, quartets 1 to 6. This means we will have another dozen or so instalments to go of this at least most enjoyable and at best absolutely brilliant music. |
