Norways most beloved composer, Edvard Grieg, received his musical education in Leipzig, imbibing the music of Mendelssohn and Schumann. On the basis of these romantics he developed his own style, in which he prominently implemented elements of the Norwegian folklore and folk music: one can always hear the fjords and woods in the background.
Griegs chamber music output is small but of high quality: the two string quartets (the unfinished 2nd quartet is here finished by his good friend Julius Röntgen), the three violin sonatas, of which the 3rd is definitely a masterpiece, the elegiac cello sonata and an andante for piano trio.Excellent performances by the Raphael Quartet, Ivan Zenaty/violin, Robert Cohen/cello and Roger Vignoles, piano. |
