THE AUTOMATON AND THE MAGIC SPELL

The DVD documentary The Automaton and the Magic Spell introduces us to the world of French composer Maurice Ravel through one of his most lovely works, String Quartet in F major, performed on screen by the Canadian ensemble Quatuor Arthur Leblanc. The film presents a series of four dance segments interspersed with documentary vignettes. The choreographies correspond to the four movements comprising the work and recreate key elements of the French composers life. Drawing on archival documents, the vignettes offer a brief biography of Ravel.

Maurice Ravel led a peculiar life. A discreet child and an average student at the Conservatoire, he was a dandy during the belle époque, a soldier in the First World War, and a celebrity during the Roaring Twenties. The film explores different facets of the composers original personality, lingering notably on his interest in automatons and mechanics, his fascination with the world of children, his deep love for his mother and his passion for Spain. At once a solitary man and a man of the world, Ravel dedicated his entire life to his music.
