French composer Georges Bizet is famous for only one masterpiece: the opera Carmen. From that we can already hear that he is a brilliant orchestrator. No wonder he compiled from this opera two orchestral suites, offering such favourites as the Habanera, Malaguena, Song of the Toreador a.o. The other works in this 3-CD set show Bizet as a master of the picturesque, capturing the atmosphere of the scene in brilliant colours and melodies. Most noteworthy is his Symphony in C, a work from his teens, in which he shows his mastery already in full. Excellent performances in digital sound. |
