Balakirev is probably best known as leader of the so-called Mighty Handful. Also part of this group of five nationalistic Russian composers in St. Petersburg were Borodin, Mussorgsky, Cui and Rimsky-Karsakov. Unfortunately for the increasingly eccentric Balakirev his style of composing became already old-fashioned during his lifetime. Being also a formidable pianist himself he wrote extensively for his instrument.
Russian-born pianist Alexander Paley made recordings of Balakirevs complete piano music. On 6 CDs one can hear everything from the monumental Islamey to many of the salon-like pieces of varying importance. This wide display gives the listener ample opportunity to discover influences by other composers on the work of the Russian. Especially Chopin but also Glinka and Berlioz make appearances. |
